DEMETER is a Research Organization with 735 personnel of whom 106 are researchers in the Directorate of Agricultural Research. The Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products and Wine employs 10 researchers, 19 scientific personnel (5 Ph.D, 3 MSc), and 9 administrative and support staff.
Qualifications, expertise and know-how:
DEMETER is the major agricultural research institution in Greece. It comprises 65 research institutes and experimental stations. It maintains close links with most Greek Universities as well as much official collaboration with international organizations and institutions (FAO, IPGRI, OECD, INRA, DLO, etc.), universities and industries. The last years the Institute of Wine has developed collaboration at national and European level participating as coordinator or partner in many projects (e.g. GR-YEASTS, ADAPT-Bis). The main research activities include the exploration of factors affecting wine quality, the evaluation of native grape varieties for the production of premium wines, the development of new technologies in winemaking production and preservation, studying the physiology, genetics and molecular biology of wine yeasts and bacteria. The institute is fully equipped on both laboratory and pilot plant level to conduct research in wine fermentation and for carrying out the submitted project.
Scientific Team:
- Dr. Aspasia Nisiotou, scientific responsible of the project, researcher in DEMETER with B.Sc. In Enology, M.Sc. in Food Biotechnology and Ph.D. in Food Microbiology, has participated as post doctoral researcher in several European and international research programs at Agricultural University of Athens, and conducted research at the University of Udine, Italy, and the RIKILT - Institute of Food Safety, Wageningen, The Netherlands. She has been awarded the National Scholarship Foundation for graduate studies and two “Marie Curie” EU Fellowships for training at the University of Nottingham and University of Maribor. She has published many papers and has served as reviewer in international Journals.
- Dr. Chrysoula Tassou Senior Researcher (Biologist from Athens University, Ph.D. in Food Microbiology from Bath University, UK) is working as researcher in DEMETER for almost 20 years in subjects related to food safety (pathogens and mycotoxins) and spoilage (microbial growth/survival, physiology, qualitative and quantitative determination), and to olive fermentation and food preservation with novel techniques (high pressure, modified atmosphere packaging, biopreservation). She is also head of the accredited microbiological laboratory of the Institute. She has participated in the implementation of 27 research projects, as coordinator or as scientific leader. She is reviewer in many international scientific journals, member of scientific societies and evaluator in research projects submitted in EU (NEST, ERC, FP7‐SME) or in progress reports of running EU research projects. She has published 42 papers in SCI journals, 13 chapters in international scientific books, 85 papers in proceedings of international and national conferences and has more than 800 citations (h-index 16).
- Dr. Nikolaos Chorianopoulos, researcher in DEMETER, with PhD in Food Microbiology and post-doctoral training in AUA, and Colorado State University, USA has worked in more than 14 European and national projects. His work has been focusing on the field of food microbiology with special interest in food safety. He has published many scientific papers and book chapters. He has served as reviewer in international Journals.
- Dr. Georgios Banilas, Biologist, Ph.D. in Plant Biotechnology (University of Athens). As a post-doc, he has carried out research in plant and microbial genetics and genomics at the Friedrich-Alexander University, Germany, the lab of Molecular Biology, Agricultural University of Athens, and the lab of molecular biotechnology, University of Calgary, Canada. He has participated in several European and international research programs, from which several publications in leading international Journals have arisen. He has served as grant reviewer for research proposals and as reviewer in international Journals.
- Dr. Paraskevi Pramateftaki, Research assistant, Biologist with Ph.D on Genetics and Biotechnology from Athens University has been participating as member of the team or as responsible in projects related to the proposal. Maria Metafa MSc, is PhD candidate in Analytical Chemist and has more than 15 years of experience in instrumental analysis of wine. Ioannis Marmaras, BSc in Enology and MSc in Viticulture and Enology, has a long experience in experimental/large scale fermentations and chemical/microbiological analysis of must and wine. Garyfallia Karapetrou, Oenologist, has more than 15 years of experience in chemical analysis of musts, wines and spirits and experimental vinification.
