PEZA
PEZA is an SME Association/Grouping . There are currently 91 permanent employees and about 30 seasonal staff each year. It coordinates 20 primary cooperatives with 3000 members.
Qualifications, expertise and know-how:
Peza is a Union of Agricultural Cooperatives producing, selling and exporting wine and olive oil. It was constituted in the year 1933 for grouping all the agricultural cooperatives within the Peza region. At the area of Peza Union there are 30.000 sq. m. of vineyards, property of its member-farmers (10.000 wine vineyards I.G.P -V.Q.P.R.D., 8.000 for table wine, 12.000 for raisins and table grapes). Peza Union has a wine factory with the capacity of processing 20.000 tons of grapes, with tanks and various storage spaces of wine of 25.0000 tones, a wine bottling factory and a laboratory of quality control. Peza Union participates actively at the wines of Crete Network, which aims at promoting the Cretan Vineyard. Peza objectives are diverse. Among them: i) the defense of the collective interests of the Sector, ii) the representation of the Sector in the diverse public and private institutions, iii) the promotion of the market and iv) the promotion of research and development activities. Peza Union and all their components are strongly interested in the development of new commercial presentations. In fact, the Sector has put in the market diverse kinds of wines and is also aware about the demand of consumer for natural products. Following this line of innovation, the Union has developed products including high proportion or total presence of natural products. The development of this kind of products requires research that is beyond the possibilities of one single company or association. Furthermore, the EU is the main world producer of wine, then a coordinate effort at European scale will represent a very attractive activity which will benefit all the wine producing countries currently belonging to the EU. In summary Peza Union considers this project as an essential activity piece within its mid and long term strategy for product development, business expansion and improvement of its competitiveness. Peza Union has a long experience on the promotion of research at national level. Peza has coordinate and total or partially financed research programs on the fertile land and the systematic cultivation of the area offer the exceptional varieties of grapes out of which the noble wines are derived that accompany and enhance the tastes of an affluent table. The investment of PEZA UNION in the field of wine with the credible state of the art technology of the aseptic package Tetra Pak offered the opportunity of producing another innovative product in continuation to the rationale of the standardization of wine in bag-in-box (The Party's Wine). At present PEZA UNION has deposited an investment program for the modernization of the wine factory and the bottling of wine which would mean the historic renovation of the core of the facilities which date back to 1933.
Scientific Team:
Mr. Georgios Koumantakis will be the person in charge of the project from the Peza Union side. He is a highly experienced Enologist with a broad information about the Sector requirements, research and development transfer to the Sector and dissemination of information. He will be assisted by the Peza Union team, which is composed of highly qualified professionals.
